Write a Letter to Your Legislator

Childhood mental health issues have skyrocketed since smartphones came onto the market. There is an alarming body of evidence confirming that social media, unsupervised internet use, or overuse of screens negatively impacts youth mental health, brain development, and empathy. Our kids are logging on for 7+ hours per day, many of which are during school.  We can help change this. We must protect our children’s brain development from potential permanent damage, help re-build their self-esteem, and find fulfilment in life again.

Ask your local representatives to address these concerns by creating legislation that prohibits students’ use of personal internet phones & devices at schools (K-9) and on school buses. Download the template below then click on democracy.io to paste the contents of the letter into their contact form to send the message to your representatives.

Write a Letter to Your School Superintendent

Parents and educational experts have growing concern regarding the overreliance of our public schools on screen-based learning.

Excessive screen time has been associated with many maladies, including anxiety and depression, executive function disorders, eye disorders, and screen addiction. While screens in schools are not the only source of these problems, our schools share a responsibility in making sure they do not exacerbate such issues.

Use the following downloadable template to create your own letter to your school district's superintendent requesting that phones be kept off of school property, including on school buses.

Write a Letter to Your Principal

Allowing smartphones and other personal devices in our schools is having numerous negative affects on the well-being of children of all ages. Note this quote by experts Jonathan Haidt and Jean M. Twenge in a recent NY Times article: "The smartphone brought about a planetary rewiring of human interaction. It transformed peer relationships, family relationships and the texture of daily life for everyone — even those who don’t own a phone or have an Instagram account. It’s harder to strike up a casual conversation in the cafeteria or after class when everyone is staring at their phones. It’s harder to have a deep conversation when... interrupted randomly by buzzing, vibrating 'notifications.' Life with smartphones means 'we are forever elsewhere.'" ("This Is Our Chance to Pull Teenagers Out of the Smartphone Trap" | New York Times)

Download the following template and use it to create your own letter to the principal of your child's school requesting that phones be kept out of schools and off of school buses during the school day.
